Babies smuggled into Norway from Bulgaria

Norway's consul in Bulgaria says he's not surprised that Norway is on the list of countries into which a Bulgarian man allegedly smuggled small children.
The Bulgarian was taped while bragging to a BBC journalist, posing as a British "customer," that he had smuggled children to Norway, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Ireland.
The BBC aired a documentary on the alleged smuggling Thursday night that featured the man, known as "Harry." He offered to sell toddlers to the BBC's undercover reporter for a price of EUR 60,000 (about USD 82,000).
Bulgaria's interior ministry says to BBC that it has detained three people, including one who said he was a trafficker.

Spanish woman 'is oldest mother'

A 67-year-old Spanish woman is reported to have given birth to twins according to hospital officials in Barcelona, becoming the world's oldest mother.
She gave birth to the twins, who have been placed in an incubator, by caesarean section early on Saturday.
The woman is one year older than Romanian Adriana Iliescu who gave birth in January 2005 to a baby girl.
It's too late to get children at that old age. She could die before the kids reach school age.

Norwegiann children prefer friends to TV

Children in Norway, and in Scandinavia in general, aren't nearly as preoccupied with TV as they are elsewhere in Europe.
A new study suggests that Scandinavian children spend more time with their friends and participating in sports than other European children.

While more than 40 percent of children questioned in Spain listed TV-watching as their favourite activity in free time, just 18 percent of Norwegian children responded the same.

Violence against children

In the past three years parents have abused 20 small children to death in Norway, and now police want legal changes.

According to the magazine Police Forum, seven children a year die in Norway because their parents mistreat them. Child welfare authorities must be notified when an abused child arrives at a medical center - police are not warned automatically
One case involved a father who beat his five-month-old daughter to death because she wouldn't stop crying. She suffered several fractures of the skull, fractures in six ribs, her leg was broken in two places and hemorrhaging in both eye.
