Norwegians fall for potency drug promotions

Authorities say Norwegians are gambling with their own health by ordering large amounts of drugs that are supposed to resemble Viagra over the Internet. Customs inspectors are seizing rising numbers of the drugs when they enter the local postal system.

It seems that many Norwegians actually click on the numerous "penis enlargement" promotions that regularly make their way through junk mail filters and into Norwegians' e-mail accounts.
That's the only explanation Norwegian health and customs authorities have for the jump in potency drugs entering the country outside the regulated pharmacy system. Many of the drugs are so-called "pirate copies" of well-known brands like Viagra.

Alcohol more threatening than drugs

Norwegian researchers claim that many parents are so worried their children will get involved with drugs that they overlook the dangers of alcohol, which often flows freely among teenagers. The researchers believe alcohol can pose an even bigger threat.

Intoxication, fights, injuries and unwanted sexual relations are all part of the drinking culture that's rampant among Norwegian youth. Two researchers at the state institute that examines alcohol abuse think it's time parents woke up.

Drug network smashed

Arrests have been made in Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium as part of a concerted drug raid led by Kripos, Norway's National Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS).

"Operation Broken Lorry", led by the NCIS division for organized crime, resulted in 34 arrests in the three countries and the seizure of 400 kilograms (880 lbs) of hashish, 10 kilos (22 lbs) of heroin and 6 kilos (13.2 lbs) of cocaine, just in Norway.

In addition to the confiscated drugs police have also charged several persons in connection with a 224 kilo (492.8 lb) consignment of hashish yet to be seized.

Customs officers uncovered a record 190 kilos of cocaine during a routine check of the South American ship "Crusader" in northern Norway on Wednesday night.

Grandma grew cannabis

An 81-year-old woman with a green thumb got a shock when her grandchildren spotted one of her flourishing plants.
Inger Livold was satisfied with the healthy green plant growing by the wall in front of the elderly center, even if she hadn't planted it herself, she told local newspaper Drangedalsposten.
The 81-year-old garden enthusiast said that the plant appeared where she usually feeds birds.
"It was my grandchildren that spotted it. Grandma, that's hash, they said. You can't have that in the garden," Livold told the newspaper.
The pensioner called the police herself and police lieutenant Terje Gautefall confirmed that she had an unusually lush cannabis plant in the garden, NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting) reports.
The 'culprit' appears to have been birdseed, since the cannabis plant is surrounded by sunflowers.
Gautefall confiscated the illegal plant, but Livold has plenty of others to attend to in the center garden.
