Football: Solskjaer to train ManU strikers

Norway international Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will stay on at Manchester United as special coach for the Premier League club's strikers.

This was confirmed by ManU manager Sir Alex Ferguson at a press conference on Friday.
- We want him as part of our coaching team this season. He will assist us with the technicaal part, particularly with the strikers. I believe he will be a good trainer, Ferguson said.
He also paid further tribute to Solskjaer:
- He was a fantastic player and a human being, a dedicated footballer. All that you all know about Ole Gunnar is quite true. There are no myths around him. He is a genuine man, and has been a credit to our club, to himself and to his family, Sir Alex said.

Football: ManU's Solskjaer retires

Norway's most famous footballer, Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Solskjær), has decided to retire from the sport with immediate effect.

The report says Solskjaer had been informed that an eighth operation on his knee would be needed if he wanted to continue his career, and that this had made the 34-year-old star decide to retire.
He underwent his last operation last June, and was then convinced he still had something to offer.

Soskjaer has played 366 matches and scored 126 goals for Manchester United since he transferred from Molde in 1996. He became legendary in ManU when he scored the winning goal in the Championship League final in 1999.

His teammates, his coach, Norwegian fans and even Argentinian rival Lionel Messi -- one of the best soccer players in the world -- were hailing John Carew after Norway's surprise victory over Argentina Wednesday evening.

The Norwegian national soccer squad beat Argentina's 2-1 in a so-called "friendly" match at Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo. Not many had expected that Norway, not exactly known as an international soccer powerhouse, would be any match for Argentina.

What has become known as the world`s biggest soccer tournament, the Norway Cup, kicks off in Oslo on Sunday, and 30,000 young boys and girls from the age of 6 to 19 from 45 nations will fight for a place in the prestigious finals at Bislett stadium on Saturday.

It is the 35th time the tournamant has been held, a tournament known for bringing people from around the world together for a week of fun and sportsmanship.
This year, more than 1500 teams participate in the Norway Cup, coming from as far away as Uruguay, China, Vietnam, Brazil , the US, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Girls participated in Norway Cup right from the beginning in 1972. This was quite extraordinary, even for a country in the forefront concerning women’s rights, like Norway. The Norwegian Football Association (NFF) recognised women’s football officially 4 years later, in 1976.

According to NRK a furious mother charged onto the field during a girl's soccer game in northern Norway last weekend.
A 13-year-old girl from Bardufoss was physically attacked by the enraged woman during a football tournament.
According to NRK, a female parent from the visiting team came running onto the pitch and attacked a 13-year-old. She pushed the 13-year-old onto the ground, so the girl was lying on her back.
The girls were called a range of nasty names, and were also told to "get their ugly asses off the field", NRK reports.
The excitable mother from Tromsø was not content with insults and flinging a girl to the ground, she then took a stranglehold on the referee .

Bryan King honored

English goalkeeper Bryan King was honored for his long football career at Millwall over the weekend, but his Norwegian connections are less well known.

King now lives in Kongsberg in Norway and is a talent scout for top London club Tottenham. He has also trained four Norwegian teams in the lower divisions of the national league system.

Still revered as a hero by Millwall supporters, goal keeper King was signed for £57,000 from the Lions in the summer of '75. He will never be forgotten for misjudging his drop kick out of the area in the final minute against Burley, and being penalised for handball.

Carew makes Team of the Year

Norwegian soccer striker John Carew has won more recognition for his success in France.
Carew returned to Lyon from his Christmas holiday in Norway to find that he had won a spot on the French league's dream team picked by sports newspaper L'Equipe.This was nice - especially since it is for all of 2005 and I have only played here for half a year," Carew told.

Playoff Norway v Chech Republic

Norway's national soccer squad, fresh from victories over Moldova and Belarus, will now have to beat the Czech Republic in order to qualify for World Cup action next year.

Norwegian coach Åge Hareide was relieved his team won't have to play against Spain. He thinks Norway has a better chance against the Czech squad.

A lottery on Friday determined that Norway will face off against the Czech Republic on home turf in Oslo on November 12, and then again in Prague on November 16. The team emerging from both matches with the most goals will be allowed to play in the World Cup in Germany next summer.

Norway beat Belarus 1-0 in Minsk on Wednesday but had qualified for the lottery after beating Moldova last weekend.

A drunken soccer fan had to be taken into custody for aggressively protecting his right to watch a football match on television. A man in his 40s from Drammen settled down on Wednesday evening with a supply of alcohol, ready to watch a full night of Champions League football, but the more he drank the more sensitive he became to distracting sounds.
Finding the sounds coming from the adjacent apartment to be interfering with his television enjoyment, the football fan went out into the hallway to bang loudly on his neighbor's door while screaming and complaining.
The sports fan's neighbor responded by calling the police, and the sensitive spectator eventually and reluctantly returned to his own apartment upon urging from the law.
After another interval of drinking the man returned to hammering away on his neighbor's door while yelling that he wanted "to be left in peace".
The second offense was met with arrest, and the eager football fan now likely faces charges of disturbing the peace.

New injury for soccer star Solskjaer

awaited comeback of Norway's leading soccer star Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. (Man Utd)
The 32-year-old Manchester United striker has been struggling to recover from extensive knee surgery and was scheduled to be in full training now.
"He has had a cartilage tear. It is a very recent injury," Swedish knee specialist Lars Petersson told newspaper VG.
Professor Petersson has been tending to Solskjaer for the past year after his knee operation. The doctor said that he had anticipated Solskjaer's return in October but would now prefer to say some time in the course of this autumn.
Petersson could not guarantee that sorely missed goal scorer would return to action for his club or Norway."I am never 100 percent certain about such cases," Petersson said.
