Sex and drugs rock the city

Merchants, visitors, residents and workers in downtown Oslo are becoming downright annoyed over open drug-dealing and prostitution on several city streets. Some offenders have taken to having sex in a downtown park, just behind the venerable Akershus Fortress and Castle.

It's not very nice that it looks like a bordello in the park and on the side streets.
Norwegian politicians appear poised, when the next parliamentary session opens, to make the purchase of sexual services illegal in Norway.

Police claim they're not overlooking the illegal drug and sex activity, but say they don't have the capacity to stop it.

Buying sex can yield jail term

Norway's center-left government has gone along with calls to criminalize the purchase of sexual services. "Norway shall not be a free zone for pimps and human traffickers," said the Justice Minister.

The Minister unveiled a new proposed law prohibiting the purchase of sex, punishable with up to six months in jail.

Prostitution has been legal in Norway, but government officials have grown increasingly worried about the scores of foreign prostitutes on local streets in recent years. They believe most are victims of human traffickers who have forced the women into prostitution and seize the vast majority of their earnings.

The new proposed law forbidding the purchase of sex is aimed at prostitutes' customers and alleged white slavery operations.

Young men believe rape myths

A new study of young men in central Norway reveals disturbing attitudes towards rape.

The study found that one in three believed that a woman can enjoy a rape.

The study of young attitudes to sexual harassment also showed that one boy in four agreed or strongly agreed that women have a tendency to exaggerate how harmful a rape is, and that one of three believe it is important to assess the victim's past in a rape trial.

Women to blame

Every other Norwegian man believes that flirtatious women have themselves to blame if they are raped.

The shock results appear in a report compiled by Amnesty in cooperation with Reform - resource center for men

One in five men surveyed said that a woman known to have several partners is fully or partly responsible if sexually assaulted, and 28 percent believed that a woman who dresses sexily is wholly or partly responsible for a sexual assault.

I think the results of this study are frightening.
It is unacceptable to blame women who have been exposed to sexual assault and violence.

A new report has charted about 1,100 sexual assaults in Christian settings over the past decade, or two per week on average since 1996.
The first years it was focused on assaults on women by men. In recent years the research have also seen that men are victims of assault. About 100 of the 1,100 cases we reported concern sexual attacks on men.
As recently as last week a priest was jailed for assaulting a minor.

Female rapist

A Norwegian jury Tuesday upheld a lower court's conviction of a young woman found guilty of raping a male acquaintance.
The 24-year-old woman was earliers sentenced to nine months in prison for raping the man after a night on the town in January 2004.
This is the first time in Norway that a woman is sentenced to prison for rape.

The woman was found guilty on Thursday of forcing sex on a sleeping man has been sentenced to eight months in prison by a Bergen court.

The woman was sentenced according to rape laws. This was the appeals trial, after she had been sentenced to nine months for the same offense.

Orgy may result in charges

Swedish police ended their surveillance by raiding a hotel room where a middle-aged Norwegian woman was entertaining eight naked men, one of them her husband.

The Norwegian couple had placed a contact ad on the Internet announcing a gangbang party to be held in a room at the Hotel Scandic in Mölndal, just outside of Gothenburg.

The couple had 480 responses and picked out 15 to attend the 'party'. The invitees paid NOK 300 per head to take part, money to cover the hotel expenses.
"Both my husband and I have wanted for several years to have sex with each other and several men at the same time," the woman told police, according to Expressen.

Police waited half an hour before ending their surveillance and making their raid. They believe the gangbang party is good business for the Norwegian couple, and that they also sell film of the orgy on their web site.
Two of the invitees have been charged with purchasing sex, and police are unsure about how many may have managed to do so.
"If the court agrees then I will take the matter further. Then the Norwegians can be charged with pimping, while the other men can be charged with purchasing sex," Sjödell said.

A clinic that specializes in sex education and offers free birth control for youth in Oslo thinks sex education should begin while small children are still in local kindergartens."I think that the last year of kindergarten is absolutely the time to start providing simple information and answers to the many questions children have," Siv Gamnes, head of the clinic (KSO, Klinikk for seksuell opplysning) told radio station P4 on Tuesday."There's a lot of things they're wondering about, and we can answer why boys and girls are different, and how a baby is created," Gamnes added.Most Norwegian children start attending kindergartens, or day-care centers, as toddlers and continue until formal schooling begins at the age of six. Gamnes doesn't think age five is too early to start talking about sex.That's because she's experienced a lot of misinformation among the youth who seek help at KSO."By the 10th grade, when many start getting sex education, many of the students are already sitting with information that's wrong," she said. "We have to 'un-teach' them before we can start teaching them."Starting early with sex education can help prevent children from getting wrong information that they can go around believing for a long time, Gamnes said
