The sand-engulfed Buried Church, Skagen, Denmark

The desertification that hit the area in the 18th and 19th centuries led to the abandonment of the old parish church to the migrating sands— the famous Buried Church (Den tilsandende Kirke). The tower of the church remains protruding from the dunes, as it was left as a sea marker when the church was abandoned at the close of the 18th century.

Finnchurch, an odd cliff

Finnkjerka which is said to be the most graceful sea cliff in Norway. Finn-Church is a ancient Saami sacrificial site.

Nidaros Cathedral (Nidarosdomen)

Nidaros Cathedral (Nidarosdomen), considered the most significant church of Norway, is located in Trondheim. It was the cathedral of the Norwegian archdiocese, established in 1152. Since the Reformation, it has been the cathedral of the Lutheran bishops of Trondheim or Nidaros. The architectural style of the cathedral is romanesque and gothic. It was an important destination for pilgrims coming from all of Northern Europe.

The Arctic Cathedral

The Tromsdalen Church (Tromsdalen Kirke), which is more commonly known as The Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen), is a church in Tromsø, Norway, built in 1965. The church is a parish church and not, strictly speaking, a cathedral.

Because of the church's distinct look and situation, it has often been called "the opera house of Norway", likening it to the famous Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia. The church is probably the most famous landmark in Tromsø.

Gay pastor gets job after all

The Bishop of Oslo, who's maintained a conservative stand against gay pastors in the state church, has backed down, and now will grant a ministry to a pastor who's living in a gay partnership.
The Bishop's decision earlier this month to deny a pastor's position to a gay sparked wide debate when it became known last week.

Two sexual assaults a week

A new report has charted about 1,100 sexual assaults in Christian settings over the past decade, or two per week on average since 1996.
The first years it was focused on assaults on women by men. In recent years the research have also seen that men are victims of assault. About 100 of the 1,100 cases we reported concern sexual attacks on men.
As recently as last week a priest was jailed for assaulting a minor.

Nidarosdomen Chatedral

The Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim's most dominant landmark, is Norway's national treasure and Scandinavia's largest medieval building. The construction of Kristkirken (the Christchurch) began in 1070 on the site of the grave of St. Olav, the Viking King who replaced the Nordic pagan religion with Christianity (the oldest still existing parts can be dated back to around 1140). The church was ravaged by fire several times, but reconstructed each time. It is mainly in the Gothic style, but the oldest parts around the nave are in the Romanesque style. The restoration work began in 1869 and was completed 100 years later in 1969. In accordance with the Constitution, Norwegian kings are crowned and blessed in the Nidaros Cathedral.
